Ijaz Chatha says trustees must be strong advocates (Sept. 12, 2008) PDF Print
For immediate release

Surrey needs trustees who will be strong advocates for a fully funded public education, says Ijaz Ahmed Chatha, SCC candidate for school trustee.

Chatha, a realtor by profession, is the father of a special needs student.

The system is so underfunded that we never know from year to year what services will be available for children with special needs. It is even more difficult for families when there are language and cultural barriers, said Chatha.

The SCC candidate said better representation on the board will lead to a better future for the next generation and asks voters to elect the SCC candidates in order to have strong advocacy for children and their parents. Surrey students need trustees who speak up, he said.

I think we need to elect trustees who will challenge the provincial government to make sure that Surrey students with special needs have the resources and services so that they don’t feel like second class citizens.

Teachers need the resources and support rather than feeling like they are making do with less, said Chatha.

Chatha believes his personal experience raising four children of different levels of schooling, energy and commitment make him a strong candidate to speak up for change in Surrey.

Trustees need to play an active role in speaking up for the rights of those who are unable to advocate for themselves. It’s time to bring parents and the community together to challenge the provincial government for proper funding of special education.
